SYL vs ODP
Many in the club have asked what is the difference between SYL and ODP.
Here are some answers.

ODP - part of USYSA under US Soccer, and administered by the state WYSA.  Cost set by state, appx. $700.00

SYL - part of USL (pro system with MLS at the top of the pyramid, followed by A-League, 1st & 2nd Division, W-League or Women's pro league, PDL or Pro Developmental League for U18-U23 college players, and Super Y League or youth developmental league).  Member of US Soccer, registration administered by US Club Soccer, and franchises, like Mequon. Cost set by franchises, Mequon $750.00

ODP - not sure where money goes but I assume it goes to Region, State, Coaching and regional Camp.

SYL - franchise fee, team fee, registrations, referee fees, 2 weekend trips transportation (buses), indoor facility training fees, coaching fees and administration fees.

ODP- Coaches level, not the highest (never seen their credentials).  Pay is something like $25/hr.

SYL
- Coaches are some of the highest level in the state (credentials on the website).  Pay is a per players fee. Coaches are paid better.

ODP - How does it work? starts with a tryout in summer or late November to select about 36 players.  Train periodically throughout the year, maybe 8-12 times (some winter and usually Monday nights during the spring club season), with some scrimmages.  Final roster of 18 goes to a regional site for a camp which includes training with regional staff of
ODP plus a tournament against 14 Midwestern state teams.  At the end of an intens week of soccer the top 16 are selected to the MW Regional team.  That team may or may not attend a tournament where National staff comes to  observe the 4 regional teams for National Pool Selections.  A select few could be selected to attend the Adidas Academy in Bradenton Florida (residency program for the National Team).

SYL - How does it work? starts with tryouts in November, and continues throughout the winter months until slots are filled (26 total). Train a few times during the winter, then Friday nights during the club spring season in order not to conflict with club commitments (HS girls would
not train in SYL during HS season). Training switches to midweek when girls HS season ends and club season.  League of 10-13 top teams from top Midwestern Clubs like the Chicago Magic, Detroit Wolves, Cleveland Academy, Toronto Lynx, Pittsburgh Strikers and more start competing in mid-to-end of June, July thru beginning of August.  1st and 2nd place in League qualify for a National Tournament in Florida in mid-November.  Players can get selected to the SYL ODP during league games.  Each opposing coach votes for best players on opposing team during games.  Regional Scouts also attend random games to help select.  From this natural environment, players are being viewed during top level games, "not a one-week camp...what if you are injured".  If selected, they attend a National Camp in Florida in February whereby 9 Regions come to compete, playing 8 games in 5-7 days.  National Staff and staff from the Bradenton Residency Program show up to assess.  A pool of 16 is selected at the end of the week, and that pool gets invited to play against National teams at Bradenton, and players will get a shot at a National Pool/Team spot.  This is a much more comprehensive system then the state ODP set-up as you can see.

Training by great coaches, games against great competition/club teams not make-shift teams, a National Championship (plus we enter the US Club Soccer National Cup), age group same as club soccer, and the ODP potential.

I was a head coach in the ODP for 9-years.  I was the Co-Director of the ODP Program for one year.  My teams won the MW regional tournament cup 3 times and I placed many players on regional and national pools. I had probably more success in the State ODP as anybody ever did.  I can tell you, although you may think it's biased, that the SYL is superior to the ODP in many ways.  I would suggest that players do both, especially if they can afford it, and have the right level of passion, desire and skill.  If someone wants to be a top High School player, this is the extra advantage you need.  I can't tell you how many people thank us every year for the development they received.  If you want to be a
college player, you will be competing for scholarships against players from all over the country that have this stuff on their resume's.  Lastly, if you just want to get better, why would you spend $500 -$1,500 on elaborate camps like Vogelslinger and others, if you could get better development throughout the summer in meaningful games. Great games, great fun!

Question: Should I do both?
Yes!

Question: What if I can't afford both?
I would do the one you get the most for your buck!  That is clearly SYL!  Remember, only 16 from the whole region make the National team, and only a few make the regional teams ODP or SYL.  So, to be realistic...it is all the other stuff.

Question: What are the chances of going to Nationals?
In the last 29 years only about 10 teams qualified for the Nationals in US Soccer (Mequon 3 times).  In SYL we had 2 qualify 3 years ago, 1 last year, and 3 this year (2006) U20, U15 and U13, */plus/* the U17's qualified for the US Club Soccer National Finals in North Carolina this summer as well! Our U16's took 4th and our U14's took 3rd, so they just missed out as well.

Question: What if I can't commit to every weekend in the summer?
Tryout for SYL!  work it out with your coach, the roster is big, so we can handle that.

Question:  What if I make the State Team for ODP?
Tryout for SYL!  We will block out those dates for the regional camp!

Question: Who are the coaches of the teams in SYL?
Will decide immediately after tryouts.

Question: When will I know if I made it?
We wait to see what tryouts look like and if we fill all 26 spots, we may be done, if not we may invite people to training sessions, but you should know within a week.

Question:  Do I have to be in the Mequon Soccer Club to make a team?
No! If fact, players come from as far as Kenosha, Madison and Green Bay!

Question: Do my parents need to go on trips?
No, we take a coach bus with a few parent chaperon's, but they are welcome to go.

Question: How many games and how many away?
8-12 games, 50% home and 50% away.  Usually on weekends, one game per day, and sometimes we will take a 3-day trip (Fri, Sat, Sun).

Question: Any additional fees:
Some.  If we enter a tournament, if we qualify for Nationals, or you qualify for SYL-ODP, plus lodging and food on trips.

Question: Do I have to buy a uniform?
Yes.  Extra fee, but we are going with Tee's this year to keep cost down.

Question:  What ages are offered?
U13 Boys & Girls (but U12's can tryout as well), U14 Boys & Girls, U15 Boys & Girls, U16 Boys & Girls, U17 Boys & Girls, and the Super U20 Men (we may put together two teams
this year). Other than U20, only one team per age permitted.

Question: If I have more question, where do I go?
 www.mequonsoccerclub.com, www.SuperYLeague.com.

Hope to see you on Saturday, November 14th, 2008!
