MEQUON U-18 BOYS SOCCER TEAM TO PLAY FOR STATE CUP TITLE

Some people might call it a recipe for success – start with 5 equal parts Cedarburg and Homestead, add 4 parts Germantown, 2 parts Nicolet, and a dash of Milwaukee Lutheran and Kohler, and you have the sweet taste of Wisconsin State Cup Finals for the 18 high school seniors comprising the Boys U-18 Mequon Red soccer team.

Under the tutelage of former Milwaukee Rampage player Sinisa Angelovski, the U-18 Mequon Red team has quite the Cinderella story – working their way from the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association’s First Division to the Premier Division and competing this season in the First Division of the Midwest Regional League, where they knocked off the #2 team in the region in their first MRL game (the top-ranked team in Minnesota – Shattuck St. Mary’s). 

Now, they’re the #2 ranked team in the state, taking on the three-time defending State Champion, FC Milwaukee Blue, in their final game in Wisconsin as high schoolers.

The team is a who’s who of North Shore Conference honorees, captains, and noteworthy players, including Cedarburg seniors Will Chaney, Brandon Chmiel, Erik Hockstad, Adam Pergande and Matt Weyer; Homestead seniors George Apfelbach, Andrew Baumgarten, Chris Boehme, David Check and Matt Edwards.

The team is joined by fellow North Shore Conference honorees Nick Bernstein, Mark Ciszewski, Geoff Gerschke and Erik Knudsen of Germantown; Carlos Aguilar and Mike Rosenberg of Nicolet; Tyler Nehmer of Milwaukee Lutheran; and Mark Feltner of Kohler.

Sunday afternoon in Fond du Lac, Mequon Red, earned their first berth in the State Finals with a 3 – 1 victory over Appleton’s New United 90. 

The Final is this Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at Voigt Soccer Park in Brookfield. 

FC Milwaukee Blue fields a team that not only won the State title the last three seasons, but also won the Region II championship in 2007, and advanced to the National Title Game where they were beaten 3 – 2 by Andromeda 90 of Plano, TX.

All parents and Ozaukee County soccer fans
